The In-Between

Life is full of transitions and changes, and sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of them, not quite where we were before, but not quite where we’re going, either.

Standing in the in-between.

It can be a confusing and uncomfortable place to be, resting in this state of limbo.

We may feel like we’re not sure who we are or where we belong, like we’re caught between two worlds.

It’s that feeling of being stuck in a place where you don’t quite fit.

These moments that feel like pauses between the more important experiences

There are times that are literally in-between places; on our way home from work, waiting in line at the grocery store, or in the waiting room at an appointment.

Or those more momentous in-betweens; the time between Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, or the space between saying “yes” to “I do,” waiting to see if there is one blue line or two.

Then there are those times in life when you’ve accomplished one goal, challenge, task, or lesson and know you want to do, go, or be somewhere else but you don’t yet know where.

Whatever it is, being in the in-between can be tough.

It’s easy to feel like we’re not making progress, or that we’re not living up to our own expectations or those of others. It can be frustrating to feel like we’re not moving forward, but we’re not going backward either.

At times, it can be tempting to rush through this in-between period and just get to the other side, to the next phase of life.

But it’s important to remember that this time of transition is just as valuable and important as any other.

In fact, it’s often during these in-between times that we learn the most about ourselves and what we’re capable of. We may discover hidden strengths and talents that we never knew we had, or we may learn to rely on our own inner resources and resilience.

It is a chance to reflect on where we’ve been and where we want to go, like being in a cocoon and waiting to emerge as something new and beautiful.

It’s also a time when we may feel a sense of loss or sadness for what we’re leaving behind, whether it’s a relationship, a job, or a way of life.

These feelings are normal and valid and they will pass in time.

If you find yourself in the in-between of life, embrace it.

Take the time to reflect on where you’ve been and where you’re going, and trust that this period of transition will lead you to where you’re meant to be.

You have everything you need to navigate this journey of the in-between.

Always,
