Why does my life feel paused?
I thought that I was the only one asking this question.
The only one feeling a sense of being in a liminal space, the in-between. The sense of sitting in a waiting room, waiting on something that hasn’t revealed itself yet.
Sometimes I wonder if this restlessness is personal.
And sometimes I wonder if it’s a response to something much larger.
We live in a world that feels increasingly uncertain. Old systems seem strained. Communities feel fractured. The future feels harder to predict than it once did.
The maps we were given don’t lead us to any sort of dream or land we were promised.
Perhaps that’s a part of it, too.
But the more I listen, the more I read, the more I pay attention to what others are saying, the more I realize this isn’t just my experience.
It feels collective.
Everywhere I look, people seem to be standing in the midst of a leave-taking.
They are not who they were…
but they are not yet who they are becoming.
The life they built may not be bad. In many ways, it may even be good. There is security, comfort, and contentment.
I look around at my own life. The home I’ve built that smells like sunshine and incense, the bills are paid, the routine works. I’ve built a life I’m proud of.
And yet, something about it no longer seems to fit, like a ghost haunting my own success.
There’s a restlessness beneath the surface.
A craving for more.
More meaning. More connection. More purpose. More aliveness. More “me-ness.”
Life isn’t falling apart, but it isn’t moving forward either.
At least, not in any way we can see yet.
It feels as though we’ve arrived at the end of a chapter, only to discover that the next one hasn’t started yet. The old dreams no longer call to us. The new dreams haven’t fully formed.
The relationships, careers, identities, and routines that once felt so certain now feel like clothing we’ve outgrown. It’s still wearable, but a tad too snug, too tight, no longer made for the people we’re becoming.
And so…
we wait.
And wait.
And wait.
Just sitting smack dab in a season of uncertainty. A season that seems to be taking its own damn time.
A season where the old self loosens its grip before the new self is ready to emerge.
It feels like nothing is happening, but I can’t help but have this sense that right now… everything is happening.
A becoming that is going to rip the seams out of these ill-fitting clothes.
I feel this sense of immense hope and optimism because for so long I felt alone in this stage of becoming. Sitting in the middle of a change that hasn’t fully formed yet.
But I’m not the only one.
I know I’m not.
The more I listen, the more I hear it everywhere.
People are questioning relationships.
Questioning careers.
Questioning where they live.
Questioning what success means.
Questioning whether the lives they’ve built still fit the people they’ve become.
It all feels so much bigger than just me.
It doesn’t feel personal.
It feels collective.
Like we’re all standing in the same doorway together. One hand on what was and one hand reaching toward what will be.
And none of us can quite see what’s on the other side yet.
I keep wondering what that means.
Not in some grand prophecy sort of way. That’s not a gift that I possess.
But I do find myself asking what it means when so many people are feeling this same restlessness at the same time.
What does it mean when comfort no longer feels comfortable?
When certainty no longer feels certain?
When the things we’ve spent years building suddenly feel too small for who we’re becoming?
I don’t know the answer.
Truthfully, I don’t think anyone does.
But I do know that something is shifting.
I can feel it.
So, I’ll just sit over here and trust the process of becoming. Trust that underneath all of this uncertainty, all of this questioning, all of this restlessness, something is quietly taking shape.
For now, I’ll try to make peace with the in-between.
To stop treating it like a waiting room.
To stop assuming that because I can’t see movement, nothing is happening.
To allow the unknown, as the becoming unfolds.
And maybe one day I’ll look back and realize that what felt like standing still was actually the moment everything began to change.
Always,
