Detach.
I saw this word three times in three different capacities over a period of fifteen minutes.
It’s not a word I’ve come across often, especially not within such a short time frame.
So, me, being me, I had to take it as a sign from the universe to… well… detach.
So I thought about all the things detach can mean.
Let go.
Stop gripping the outcome.
Stop trying to figure out what someone else is going to do.
Stop making possibility into a promise.
Allow something to exist without needing to know where it is going.
Remain open without becoming emotionally tethered to the result.
Return my attention to my own life.
Let go of the past and stop dwelling and, instead, be excited for what is before me.
There is something different about detachment than disconnection.
Disconnection says, I don’t care.
Detachment says, I care, but I don’t need to control what happens.
I don’t hear this as walk away.
I hear it as stop reaching forward.
Let what is happening, happen.
And maybe that is the part I need to hear most.
Because I think I am in the middle of a kind of rebirth.
I am leaving behind an old version of myself. Not because she was wrong or because I don’t love her, but because she has carried me as far as she can.
There are things I have been holding onto that may not belong in the life I am moving toward.
Old stories.
Old expectations.
Old versions of myself.
Old attachments to how I thought things would happen, who I thought I would there, and what I thought I needed in order to feel certain I was moving in the right direction.
Maybe I don’t need to drag all of that with me.
Detachment asks something of me.
It asks me to let go.
Which sounds simple until I realize what I’m actually being asked to let go of.
It isn’t even the thing, necessarily.
It’s the possibility, the story I’ve built up around it.
The version of the future that I’ve quietly been making room for.
The hope that maybe eventually, something will become what I imagined it could be.
That’s harder to detach from.
Maybe detachment is not about losing something.
Maybe it is about making room.
And maybe that is what this next version of my life needs most.
Room.
Always,
