Who She Is
Pepper is Mira’s daughter, but she’s also her mirror.
Blunt, brilliant, and emotionally attuned beyond her years, Pepper has always seen things clearly, even when it hurt. She’s the kind of kid who listens harder than she lets on, and who often speaks the truth adults avoid.
She’s thirteen, fierce in her opinions, and still tender underneath it all. She carries the instincts of someone raised in a home full of love, grief, and self-awareness, and she has learned how to read a room very quickly.
She has a soft spot for sugar, a sharp eye for people’s patterns, and a sense of humor that’s already too clever for most of her teachers.

Her Role in the Story
Pepper is not just Mira’s daughter; she’s the witness to Mira’s growth.
She sees when her mom’s nervous system softens around Rowan. She sees when things don’t add up. She knows when something is over before it’s said aloud.
She isn’t afraid to ask the uncomfortable questions or to call something out when it feels off. She’s Mira’s compass in more ways than either of them fully realizes.
She’s also navigating her own becoming. Watching the adults in her life love, stumble, and rebuild. Figuring out who she is in a world that doesn’t always make space for girls with big feelings and bigger voices.
Where She’s Been
Pepper was born from a fling, but raised in fierce, intentional love.
Her father disappeared early. Addiction, bad choices, jail time. He’s more of a ghost than a person to her now, someone she knows of, but not from.
She’s only met him a handful of times. Sometimes he shows up clean. Mostly, he doesn’t show up at all. And even at thirteen, Pepper knows: unreliable love isn’t love. It’s a craving you eventually stop feeding.
But she doesn’t lack love.
She has Mira, her constant, her compass.
She has her grandparents. Her dad’s mom, oddly enough, in quiet ways.
And now, slowly, she’s learning how to receive love from others too:
Rowan, with his quiet hands and open eyes.
Ellie, who doesn’t try to mother her but treats her like a sister.
Cal, who doesn’t say much, but always includes her.
Even Paige, sharp, composed Paige, whom Pepper doesn’t fully understand, but quietly respects.
Still, trust isn’t easy.
Pepper keeps herself tightly contained. Even Mira only sees the cracks now and then when something finally spills over. But when it does, it’s Mira she goes to. Always Mira.
She doesn’t like many people.
She doesn’t pretend to.
But when she does like you, she’s fiercely loyal. And surprisingly soft.
She’s blunt, too blunt sometimes.
Raised to use her voice, she does. She cuts through bullshit without hesitation. But she’s still learning how to speak in a way that people can hear.
Her words can land like truth or like shrapnel.
Mira admires her fire. And is gently teaches her how to wield it.
There was a moment, long before Mira would’ve dared say it out loud, when Pepper looked up from across the fire pit, noticed the way Rowan was looking at her mom, and simply said:
“He’s a good one. Don’t be weird about it.”
She didn’t say it for Mira.
She said it because she saw it.
Because she felt it.
Because she wanted her mom to know what safe looked like.
What She’s Learning
- That love isn’t always obvious, but she knows how it feels.
- That she can be honest without being cruel.
- That not every adult deserves her trust.
- That being seen is a gift, but being respected is non-negotiable.
